Larry here from Purple Shadow BBQ. Live in Topeka, KS. Although I cooked on a somewhat sporadic basis with others in previous years, this (2009) was the first year for my wife and I on the competition trail. We did get some calls this year. So I think we would call it a successful first year. I got both of my Good-Ones when they were still referred to just by numbers and that is the way that I still think of them. I have a 30-12 and a 30-24 (Marshall). I bought the 30-12 new about 3 years ago and then bought a used 30-24 about 6 months after that. I must confess that for competition I use the 30-24 for ribs and chicken and a Stumps Elite 6 with DigiQ II for butts and brisket.

Kevin here from St. Charles. A friend from Kansas City recommended the good one when I was ready to move from simple gas grill experiments to the real thing. I'm very happy with the open range that I bought although not quite ready for the competition circuit.

Hi,
I am Ray the cajun smoker originally from South Louisiana now living in Southwest Missouri in the Ozarks. I have a Good-One open range grill and am trying to learn how to use it properly. Keeping the fire burning evenly has been a challange. Also Chris you reccomended cooking your pork butts with the fat side down, I don't understand why. One would think if the fat side was up it would melt thru the meat and keep it moist. Your help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Randy from Arizona. Recently purchased an Open Range and did my first cook this weekend. Ribs on Saturday and chicken and potatoes on Sunday. I've successfully used a WSM for years and after much research decided on The Open Range as my entry into The Good One line.Posted 9 months ago # -

Hello all. My name is Bryan, I currently live in Des Moines, IA. I bought my T-60(Trail Boss) four years ago, second hand from a fellow vendor at the Des Moines Renaissance Fair. He made me an offer I could not refuse. Anyway, I have done quite a few cooks on my smoker and love it. I do need to find something for backyard use though.

Hi Just checking out the lay of the land
I hear lots of good things about the Good One :)Posted 8 months ago # -
Hey all. My name is Scott. I have had my Open Range for about a month now. I am a Cowboy Dealer for Ace of Hearts and I handle Southern California and the west part of Arizona.
After owning numerous pits and grills and having my patio jammed up with equipment, I sold everything. I then researched pits for about -6- months with out Que-ing at all. That was the worst six months of my life! I was close to pulling the trigger on a Open Range with Rob Russell and then called it off and went back to researching. The combination of the exceptional cooking qualities of The Good-One and the positive conversations with Rob of Ace of Hearts sealed the deal! The Good-One is hands down the best rig on the market today. What other unit will let you grill while you smoke something at the same time? What other unit will let you clean the smoke box while your lump is cooling off? I can grill up a bunch of steaks in the evening and -2- hours later I have her all set up for an early morning smoke session the next morning! I live and breath anything that has to do with outdoor cooking. I currently own The Open Range model and am amazed at all it can do. The amount of grub this baby holds compared to its small foot-print is awesome.
I look forward to joining you guys on the forum. I hope I can help out with advice when called upon and hoping you guys will do the same.Posted 5 months ago # -

Oh yeah! I have grilled on it twice and smoked once. I copied the process in the Kansas city banned Tender Loin thread. I smoked 4 tender loins. The whole thing turned out unbelievably well. I was so happy at how precisely I could control the heat. I tinkered with each spinner and the big flap valve. Determining what effect each had and in the end the meat came out just awesome. I am very happy with the smoker. Now as far as using it to grill. I was not as happy with those results. The coals are very close to the grill and the back of the grill is confined by the flap valve and the height of the box. I told my wife I probably need a weber kettle to grill on also. She gave me this weird look like WTH, you just got this expensive grill now you neeed another one to. haha

Todd from Dallas, TX. Just bought the pip squeak Pony Express with adjustable charcoal grate. Watched the videos on the site about seasoning the grill and starting the charcoal and setting the vents. After about an hour of fiddling around I have her steady on 250 without much effort. I was worried having such a small smoker it would be prone to more temp fluctuations. Not so in my very limited first try.

Just got the Pony express. Made ribs yesterday. So easy to set the temp. Going to try a pork butt next week.
